It did occur to me just after I sent my mail that the RPM would have
to replace the file for all users on the system. Doh!

That sounds perfect. It would be nice if this was the sort of thing
that could be made to work independantly of the GUI toolkit you are
using (ie this is another golden opportunity for a bit of GNOME/KDE
integration ;) but I imagine that would be quite hard work.
