gconfd not starting

  I'm working on a program that uses GConf (0.3).  It creates a
GConfClient object and destroys it before exiting.  The problem is that
when it is being destroyed the message 
"Trying dir /home/ee96090/opt/gnome//share/oaf" appears and it blocks
forever.  
  That doesn't happen when I manually run gconfd in the background before
running my app.
  Any ideas?
