I think the theory was:
	. If listed, Makefile.am looks for it, which can cause
	  problems in certain situations.
	. Does not really need to be distributed with tarballs,
	  so no compelling reason to list it.

I probably should not have committed this without a little more thought -
can you describe any problems you are having with this change?
