Very few people have an ML compiler or know how to hack ML, and it
can't be put in a C library for use by other apps.
It's a pain to install, a pain to find/fix bugs in, and not
interoperable. ;-)
Moreover right now a working ML compiler and ML/GTK bindings are not
required to maintain a working GNOME desktop, so those are significant
additional maintenance burdens.
