Improper use of DESTDIR and/or use of an old or unpatched gettext
package by the one who made the tar ball.

Basically, spec files should go like this (if you don't use more rpm

BuildRoot:  /var/tmp/%{name}-%{version}-root

./configure --prefix=/usr ...                  # or /opt/gnome


(Make sure po/ is in a sane state.)
