I think the problem is not with evolution but with orbit, which sometimes
has trouble finding running instances or launching new programs...
The newer versions of orbit are more and more efficient...

Evolution starts 4 other programs (at least) on start up.
evolution-mail, evolution-addressbook, evolution-calendar and
evolution-executive-summary. These all need loaded. That is why it is
slower to start up.
