getting the mime type for a non-existant file

The only function I could find in the gnome-vfs-2.0 headers was

gnome_vfs_get_mime_type (filename)

which does not work with non-existant files.

Devhelp lists gnome_vfs_get_mime_type_from_uri (filename) and tells that 
will return the mime type on non-existant files too.

Unfortunately, this functions seems to be removed or something.

Can anyone help?
