SSL for mail notification applet?

Hello!

Is there a possibility to make the gnome 2.6 mail notification applet 
SSL capable?

I just have access to an IMAPS Server, but no plain IMAP. So I can't use 
this applet.

And even if I had plain IMAP, I wouldn't feel comfortable with sending 
my unencrypted password every 60 seconds across the net.

Any suggestions?
