If it really doesn't matter which language, I'd recommend start using something
like Ruby or Python with their bindings for Gtk+. Both are easy for the newbie
programmer (As a language) and their bindings are pretty complete. Once you
get comfortable with programming and Gtk+, it would certainly make sense
getting experience with Gtk/C. 

On the other hand I started with Gtk/C and now do both Gtk/C and Gtk/Ruby, and
nothing beats starting from C.
