gnome-config?

I've been building gtk apps for a while, but I'm a
nubester with gnome app dev.
Is gnome-config still used in makefiles for building
gnome 2 apps?  Or has it been replaced by pkg-config,
like gtk uses?
Anyone know of a good intro tutorial to building gnome
apps using gnome 2.x?  googling shows a lot that I
suspect is left over from gnome 1.x.
