I think esd should be optional. Using gstreamer makes this possible.
But I agree that gstreamer should have a simple api that could replace
the esd code. Any gstreamer developers here that can comment on this?
Hi hi,
We have the discussion a while ago. The problem was nobody could decide where it
belongs to. Initially one can belive all it needs is a simple wrapper lib that
offers that API. While that is possible, it would not mimic the behaviour of esd
in terms of caching sound snippets etc. (or at least that would need more work).
Ciao

esd -> gstreamer
Has gstreamer been confirmed as the plan for sound in Gnome in the
future??
It has in the sense of for a very long time its been the heir-in-waiting
for all things multimedia, and there is no credible challenger (xine is
patent dangerous, not flexible enough, etc). However I am lead to
believe that ESD is not dead yet because there is no simple
gst_play_sound ("/from/file") type API that is currently in use in a
couple places.
Polyp audio was considered to replace ESD, but I think for the sake of
simplifying things it was decided to, in the future, use pure GST over
another sound server.
ps. Did you derive your alias from pasting the first names of your
favourite GNOME hackers together? (bad joke :)
Cheers,
Ryan
