No work has begun on the dictation front-- although imho it would fit
nicely into this project at some point.

hm, how far has planning/coding on the dictation engine progressed yet?
the reason i'm asking is, that stefan westerfeld, and me too to some extend,
started working on various backend parts for speed recognition some time ago,
and i'd like to avoid gross dupliation in this area.
