Emacs? (shudder)  I've been using gedit since none of the tools I've tried work well.

Maybe I don't understand the msgmerge documentation. I can see that
you're supplying the individual files as compendium arguments, and the
existing translation, but why are you outputting to a pot file?

I'll assume my misunderstanding of #2 is the issue.

I was thinking as a command-line option, not blindly and automatically.
