It's an English typographical convention:

Erm... It's an *old* typographical convention - harking back to the days
of the typewriter. In modern English we're taught to only use a singular
space after a full stop, this follows both Oxford University Press and
Cambridge University Press conventions, plus those of virtually all modern
printing shops. Plus it is pointless if something is going to be rendered
through HTML (as HTML renders multiple spaces into one).
If you're using monospaced fonts on a typewriter, I could see an argument
for a double space, but as we are doing neither it should be a single
space. I would definately raise this as a bug.
