Argh! How about GNOME do something reasonable and work with the
existing Unix file semantics instead of trying to invent and implement
new ones?
This whole discussion seems predicated on what would be perfect if you
could redesign all of Unix (well, just all the file utilities and file
servers and applications and libraries). Why not consider what GNOME
actually needs?
A small requirements document of what support the user needs would be
a big help in focussing the discussion.
