To reiterate: This has absolutely nothing to do with where metadata is
stored - this is about using non-GNOME apps an a GNOME environment. It
doesn't matter if you stick the attributes in the filesystem, in a
seperate database, or up your butt - no standard unix tools understand
metadata and none of them are going to handle it. Rewrite or don't use
are your only options. LD_PRELOAD gives a very shaky level of
preservation. In the filesystem gives a little more, but the issue
remains because it is a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ISSUE.
