debian dist undefined symbol default_principal_iovec

I am getting the following error when trying to run panel:

panel: error in loading shared libraries
: undefined symbol: default_principal_iovec

I have installed into --prefix=/usr glib1.1.3, gtk1.1.2, and used
apt-get to acquire the basic gnome packages as described on the gnome
web pages (on a debian 2.0 system). However, I get the above error when
I try to run gnome. Any ideas?
