Gnome/Gtk+ and X

Is is safe to access the Xt and Xlib directly in a Gnome/Gtk+
application?
I.e. if I've got a large X app, can I use Gtk+ in just a few parts of
it and still expect everything to work?
As far as I can see, it's safe but ......
