bacnground=properties annoyance

If I set my background to be a large image, then every time I do anything
there is a big pause, complete with a blank control panel in the event of
a redraw, because the image has to be re-scaled or even just loaded.
How thread-safe is X these days? Are threads verboten in GNOME?
