I had exactly the same problem. In fact, *every* GNOME app ran at a full
load point in its idle state! This is because glib uses poll() in idle; late
2.1 Alpha kernels have broken poll(). (I don't know exactly how this worked,
but it was something like this.) Upgrade to 2.2 and this should go away.
