So you have a consistent namespace across all machines.  Same reason most if
not all AFS sites mount under /afs, although you can change it:  if I give
you a path like /afs/ece.cmu.edu/support/gnome :-) then it's the same path on
*all* AFS client machines, whether in the ece.cmu.edu cell or not.
