Errors starting gnome-session -- "panel" not starting.

I am getting a slew of these errors when I start gnome-session.
They seem to be related to the fact that the panel is getting
launched.  Any suggestions?

** ERROR **: Owner of /tmp/orbit-somebody is not the current user
aborting...
