Java Performance

I've just heard a fascinating report. Execution under
IBM JDK 1.1.8 is much, much faster under gnome than under
fvwm.

But I'm curious if this is because of goodness in gnome
(or its pathing/libs/etc) or badness in fvwm.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?
