helix-gnome 1.2 root login fails

Folks -

Here's a variation on a common issue.

I did a clean install of helix-gnome 1.2 yesterday on a clean install of suse 6.4.

gdm runs, and I can log in as a user. When I log in as root, it brings me back to the login screen.

Any ideas? The list talks about no logins allowed, root, but no users? I can't find users, but no root.
