Are you talking about booting just into a console, instead of
X-Windows? If so, edit your /etc/inittab as follows:
You will see a section that looks like this:
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have
networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#

On that last line, change the "5" to a "3", save the file and reboot.
Note that my system is a Mandrake 7.1 which is I believe similar to
RedHat 6.2, but just make sure you select the number for "Full Multiuser
Mode."
