Problems with GNOME desktop as default with KDE

I downloaded and installed the Helix code GNOME desktop ..the only way I
could get it to launch was to choose it as my default at logon.  I can
not seem to get any multimedia apps to work as user but they will work
as root.  I really like Gnome and would hate to have to go back to KDE.
If I could get this problem straightened out and get my printer to work
I would be a happy camper.
