This was sent to me in a private e-mail rather than the list and the
person with the original question so I thought I'd pass it on:

A (generally) better solution, is to add

        session    optional     /lib/security/pam_xauth.so

to

/etc/pam.d/su

This is probably what changed between RedHat versions (since I know
there was a time where I used xhost, but don't have to any more).
