Gnome-panel launcher -- problems with xssh

Until recently, I was able to get the following to successfully run from
the panel using a launcher button: 

xssh -auth xauth <machine> gnome-terminal

Just recently it has stopped working from a launcher, but still works
fine from the CL.  I have done two things recently that might have
caused the problem -- 

(1) Upgraded to Gnome 1.2
(2) Switched to using OpenSSH-2.1 rather than ssh-1.2.27

Is there anything that changed in the panel that might have caused the
xssh command to not run properly?  I guess I could easily test #2, but I
was hoping it might be something else so I don't have to break my
openssh installation.

I am running RedHat 6.2 (kernel 2.2.15) with Helix Code's release of
Gnome 1.2.  Any suggestions?
