A couple of reasons

1) because I can.  I moved to Linux in part because it provides the 
flexibility to allow me to do things the way *I* want to.
2) I use different workspaces for different tasks (one for 
internet-related tasks, one for configuring/installing packages, one 
for writing, etc).  Switching to the internet workspace to bring up the 
filemanager strikes me as being counter-intuitive.
