that's the weird thing -- that's what the manual says to do, too. only 
if i rmb on the panel itself and then go to the panel entry, the 
submenu has "add to panel," "create panel," "remove this panel" 
(greyed out), "global preferences" (which has nothing for autohide), 
"edit menus," "panel manual" (which gets me nautilus and my home 
directory -- odd), "about the panel," and "about gnome." no 
properties at all. so i suppose it's a ximian thing.
