Cd player not working

Hello,
in Gnome 2.2 on debian unstable, when I launch the Gnome CD player from
Sound&Video menu it says "Drive error" on the display and it doesn't
work. The device selected is /dev/cdrom and cdcd, a console-based cd
player works fine with it. Where could the problem be?
