gnome-panel crash and startup sequence

Greetings,

I have a problem with gnome-panel crashing on startup. It all started
after I ran the following command (which crashed panel):

filler-roller -a test.tar.gz *.jpg

where test.tar.gz did not exist.

Now gnome-panel fails to start. The stack trace is showing:

#11 0x40674ecc in gnome_vfs_monitor_add (handle=0xbffff448,
    text_uri=0x816ebe0 "file://test.tar.gz",
    monitor_type=GNOME_VFS_MONITOR_FILE,
    callback=0x809df38 <egg_recent_model_monitor_list_cb>,
user_data=0x816e378)
    at gnome-vfs-ops.c:764

which leads me to believe that there is a reference somewhere to this
file which is really hosing things up. I filed a bug against
gnome-panel, but I'm wondering if it should be against file-roller...

Anyway, a quick grep and find searches provide me no clues to where this
reference is being kept. I even wiped and rebuilt gnome to no avail
(though I retained my ~/.gnome* dirs).

Anyone know where this reference may be and how I might be able to get
rid of it so that I can get gnome-panel back?

Thanks,
Pete
