I believe you can either have GNOME (nautilus) draw the desktop,
complete with icons, or you can have it not be set, leaving the X root
window showing through which prevents you from having gnome icons on the
desktop at all. However, I think if you use a terminal and "rm" to
remove the home and trash files, then they wont be visable in Nautilus.

You are correct that it isn't there in gnome2.2. However I'm not sure
where that option is. I'm pretty sure it is an option, though.
