this worked pretty much all apps including the gnome menu itself, gedit,
epiphany etc... however it did not work for the nautilus browser.
anyone got any idea how enforce the icon size on the nautilus browser??

Did you try nautilus's edit menu -> preferences...on the view tab icon
... view defaults -> 50%
