Distributing Icons on Panels

Gnome 2.10.2 on Debian mostly sarge, kernel 2.6.11

I have several items -- 6 launchers, moonclock, weather, date-time
on a panel.  The icons spacing is unattractively uneven.  Is there a 
mechanism for re-distributing the panel content so items are evenly spaced?

If there is no automated method, is the horizontal positioning stored 
somewhere accessible?
