gnome-main-menu too large for screen

Hello, I am a newbie and need help with resizing the gnome-main-menu (0.9.12). The menu was an appropriate size for my HP mini netbook, but recently it got larger, probably with an update. Is there a settings file that I could modify? Screen resolution is set at 1024x600. I am using Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope.
