Fedora 14, Ubuntu 11.04, openSuse 11.4 those are all recent (some very) 
and maintained distribution that carry GNOME 2 and which are maintained. 
Then you can also go with Debian, Foresight and many more.

Maybe wait for 3.2?

Well that seems to be a Red Hat issue so not very relevant here, or did 
I misunderstand something?

A .0 (as in 3.0) release is not for everybody. Maybe distributions 
currently runs on the 2.x branch while GNOME is ironing out the 3.x 
branch. Apparently you should wait until the next cycle to give it 
another try and see if the bugs affecting you have been fixed.
