Do not worry.  Many of us begun back in the day when there was no
documentation and the only documentation was reading .h and .c files
to figure out what things did.

But these days there are a couple of resources you can use (gnome-love
being one place), but you can find on developer.gnome.org Havoc's book
and a few chapters from John Sheet's book.
