It seems to me that the best solution is for GNOME to have its own file

It would be nice to use the nautilus directory views instead of the GTK
clists so the user could select multiple files with the rubber band. Of
course, then one might want to implement a "small icon" view for
nautlius which would better suit the file dialog, and plus give users an
extra option when using nautilus.
The problem with using Nautilus components is the overhead involved -
how much would it take to start the required parts of Nautilus if it's
not already running? I don't have Nautilus managing my desktop (although
I must admit I've not tried it with 1.0.3) but it wouldn't make any
difference to me anyway, because I don't use desktop icons at all. My
windows system has them switched off, and all my Linux desktops get them
deleted straight off, or just totally ignored. Which is why I use
gesture recognition - anyone else seen the thing on dot.kde.org about
KGesture? If that could control Gnome apps as well... and if it didn't
depend upon KDE, or if Gnome could have one that can cooperate with it...
Yum.
You could also implement the nautilus bookmarks in the save dialog...
It could be the sweetest file dialog ever! :)
It would - I'd love a file dialog with bookmarks, especially as I
frequently have to navigate from my home directory (/home/matthew) down
to / and then up to places like /vfat/d/web/nwt/npc, which is a right
pain. KDE's dialogs handle it better than Gtk's, but Gnome could have
one that's even better.
I'm working on something else now, but maybe when I'm done with it I can
help do some of this.
I _might_ be able to manage an improved file dialog, but I don't think
it's really the kind of project I should be doing until I get more
familiarity with the Gnome libs and so forth, to know the way things are
done so apps can talk to it easily.
