Several things...

0. Am I right assuming that it is a linker error?

1. Do you have more than one libxml around in /usr/lib (or whatever
   you keep it).

2. Did you run "ldconfig -v" as root after installing libxml?

3. Have you ever had libxml version 2 installed?  (And perhaps
   left some header file or something like that.)
