I already filed bug 103595:

so one of these should be closed as a duplicate.
Also there is another workaround reported if you use 'openjade' instead
of the regular 'jade' backend. (pass '-t sgml-raw' instead of '-t sgml)
to openjade).
Details are in the bug report. As for the big picture, there are folks
here at Sun who looked deeply into printer-transport issues awhile ago
(about 18 months I think). Perhaps they can shed some light on the best
approach. Unfortunately they are no longer working directly with GNOME,
