gnumeric 1.0.5 doesn't build

i can live without excel compat. if i get >256 cols :)

thanks for the suggestion.  however, before applying your changes, i tried 
to build gnumeric 1.0.5 directly from source.  it fails when linking
the gnumeric main app, unable to resolve "xmlFree".

it appears that several files are not including getting this "DLL" extern
resolved.  i tried two fixes:

(a) hacking makefiles to switch to -lxml2 -lpthread
(b) fixing source files to include xmlmemory.h

(a) gnumeric worked, but the plugins wouldn't work.
(b) didn't fix the problem.  still doesn't build.

i've rebuilt and installed the following:

gcc is 2.95.2.1, glibc is 2.2.2.  thoughts anyone?  searching the
archives didn't turn anything up...
