GNOME required

I wish Gnumeric wasn't tied to GNOME.
I guess there must be some reasons why
it is, but I wish it wasn't since I'd
like to use Gnumeric (I use Abiword,
Dillo, and Gimp and other GTK apps)
but I don't want to use GNOME.

I have no need for GNOME (or KDE),
but I do have a need for a spreadsheet.
I read "Future Plans" on the web site,
but saw no plans to free Gnumeric from
GNOME dependancy.

Can such a "Future Plan" be added?
I don't want to be forced into using
a "Desktop Environment" just to use a
spreadsheet.  VTWM is all I need for X.
