hmmm...
Maybe my system has accumulated some lint. It seems possible that the
file saving to *.xls may be related to the same instability at this
end. FreeBSD gets the new gnumeric versions reasonably quickly, so
maybe a clean up and fresh install of gnumeric 1.2.6 will solve all
these problems. Strange that a similar problem should occur on two
unrelated machines, while they are both using the FreeBSD operating
system, they're using different versions.
By the way, the mail containing some crashing excel files is too big for
the mail list, they are being held until a moderator gets a chance to
take a look.

thanks.
1. open gnumeric 1.2.5
2. save the document to 'book1' as a excel 5.0/95 file - gnumeric title
bar reads book.gnumeric
I can not replicate that using either mouse or keyboard.
i) File -> Save
ii) select XL 95
iii) ok
title changes to book1.xls
