gtk_container_remove (GTK_CONTAINER (table), widget);

AFAIK, you need to ref the widget if you want to keep it around
afterwords.

gtk_widget_hide (widget);

Will work as well (though perhaps differently), supposing you don't want
to place "widget" into another container at some point.
