Combo problems in GTK2

Hi,

   I am currently playing with a Combo widget in GTK2, but I have some 
problems:

I'd like to select a particular item from the combo list inside the 
combo text entry
field. There is no "easy way" of doing this. I have had a look at the 
docs and they say
GTKCombo is based on GTKList, but GTKList has been marked as deprecated...
Any hint?
