Add a signal to an object

Hello all,

I want to add a signal to my application. 
I have a GnomeCanvas with alot of items on it.
When a specific networkpaket arrives I want to emit a signal, so that 
all the GnomeCanvasItems change their color.

Could somebody give me some hints, how I could realize this?
Or maybe some links or example code.
