How to launch the default browser under Gnome.

Hi All,
   I am very new to Linux development and I am using Kylix.
I am aware that to lauch a browser you can use the libc.system() API,
but how do I launch the default browser under Gnome. Does this differ to 
launching the browser under KDE and if so how do I detect which Desktop 
is the active desktop.

I imagine that to launch the default mail client would work similarly?
