empty top level makefile

I may be using the wrong list, and if
so I apologize. I'm trying to build
gtk+-2.0.6 or gtk+-2.1.0 on a Solaris
9 ultra sparc machine. I have all
the dependencies installed, I have
all the libraries (tiff, jpeg, and png)
and the configure goes off without
a hitch, except that it leaves the
top level Makefile completely empty.
The makefile has nothing in it.
Does anybody have any ideas why that
would happen?
tx,
Brian Manning
