Ah, I'm not asking for modification of your application.
To display Japanese characters on gtk, you will
have to setup X fonts, X server, locale, gtkrc
etc etc correctly. Are you sure that there's no
such issues?
"testgtk" in gtk+-1.2.x will be enough. You can
display Japanese text in text widget? Possibly
you can test by copy Japanese text from Mozilla
and paste it into text widget of testgtk.

BTW, you want to use your application under non-
Japanese LANG (e.g. LANG=C, fr_FR etc etc) but
you want to use Japanese filename?
